Spiky Waste Questions - our answers

cactussmall.jpg1) When was the last time your waste management company came up with ideas to save you money?

A brief survey showed that very few waste management companies provide ideas and suggestions on how their clients can save money.  On the other hand, Waste Efficiency’s work always involves helping clients to save.  Here are a few of our ideas in 2009.  Combined they saved over £30,000.

- Replaced customer’s use of drums for disposal of a waste stream with a bulk solution. Substantial savings made through reduced disposal costs and no further need to buy drums.

-Opened up a new disposal route for a customer producing waste wooden boxes which involved selling them rather than crushing and sending for chipping.

- Carried out a detailed waste audit for a new client which resulted in substantial amounts of waste being diverted away from landfill. Significant savings made through reduced disposal costs and through sale of recyclables.

2) How are you going to combat the £8.00 per ton landfill tax increase in April 2010?

Combating the £8.00 landfill tax increase absolutely must involved reducing waste.   When is the last time you undertook a full waste review?  Have you considered going for zero-landfill?   Ask about Waste Efficiency’s Extreme Waste Reduction (EWR) programme.

3) How can you make money from waste?

Waste, like everything a company produces, has a value.  Whether that value is a positive or negative value is down to how you treat it.  Clever buyer-sourcing, access to waste forecast data, and intrinsic industry knowhow means you can turn an outgoing cost into an incoming profit.

4) How can you be sure that your waste management activities are fully legally compliant?

Waste management compliance is a complex area and one where getting it wrong can be costly in terms of hefty fines and disastrous press coverage.

To be sure that you are fully compliant, are fully aware of where your waste is going and have site and carriers licenses to cover all waste movements ask about Waste Efficiency’s compliance auditing service.

5) How can facilities managers help to improve the company’s profitability?

Facilities managers are in a privileged position, control over product and services, means that not only can they cut costs, but greater profitability can be achieved with long-term benefits.   Specialist reviews in specific areas can provide cost-savings and simultaneous service improvements.  Ask about Waste Efficiency’s free audit.

6) Does your company differentiate itself through its environmental performance?

Green equals more sales, more clients.  It opens doors into public sectors, it improves staff morale and production output. It lifts quality. It benefits all of us.  The whole world wants to be green, but it’s also vital to avoid greenwash.  Working with Waste Efficiency can help you identify the true opportunities presented by enhanced environmental performance, handing your business the key to maximise the cost-reduction, sales, marketing and publicity benefits.

7) Do you really know where your waste ends up?

Your  waste may be legitimately loaded and you’re imagining it being recycled into a cosy fleecy jacket or a “this used to be a car tyre” pencil.   But what if it’s actually on its way to China by a slow boat, to pollute villages and waterways?  What if it’s being dumped in Nigeria, as hazardous e-waste? What if it’s being fly-tipped a few miles away?

No matter how scrupulous you are, if your waste contractor is less than diligent, YOUR business could be inadvertently polluting.

The only way to be sure is to ensure that you use reputable waste contractors, to follow loads to ensure they are going to the prescribed destination and to make sure that your compliance is 100% correct.

Alternatively you can employ Waste Efficiency to manage your waste who will do all of this and more.
